A group inquiring into one of the six SPELTAC practices that amplify language acquisition: Environment
SPELTAC practitioners create an environment in which students feel comfortable to take risks in their (language) learning. SPELTAC practitioners visibly acknowledge home languages and these are weaved into the daily fabric of the classroom. An interlingual and intercultural environment is created and all children are part of the learning. Their classrooms are “…places where international mindedness is seen in action. Internationalism is felt and children learn who they are…“ (Gallagher, 2008). The layout of classroom facilitates language acquisition. Display of books, reference guides are easily accessible and supplement learning. Classroom display is language rich and student created.
