    • Hi Petra, I believe in activating/ accumulating prior knowledge before starting a new topic/ unit too but find it really difficult with some of my students who are both new to English and very shy. I was once very successful in extracting this knowledge through art. The particular student was such a great artist that she was able to express her experiences and understanding through drawings. This made her feel less shy too as she was showing success.

I agree that sometimes it is really hard to extract information from students both shy and new to English, and sometimes we don’t really get the full picture till the students have more advanced skills. Sometimes it is just a reality and not much can be done till students are more academically and socially ready to show their learning. Perhaps the priorities at the stage of learning should be more focused on developing students’ confidence, as well as basic interpersonal communication skills.
